Synopsis:
One minute I was a courier for criminals, making ends meet so I could take care of my little brother. The next, four stunningly hot Norse gods had brought me back from the dead with wings sprouting from my back and a whole set of valkyrie powers. I guess that’s just how life goes sometimes.
Too bad our victory over our supernatural enemies turned out to be a farce. The divine home I thought I’d receive is a trap instead. A trap that’s slowly closing in on us, dredging up every painful moment from our pasts.
Can I trust these tempting godly men now that I’ve seen how many secrets they’ve kept from me? And what am I going to do if I have to face my own darkest horrors all over again?
I’d better figure that out fast. Because I’m Aria Watson, and I will not be broken.
*Their Dark Valkyrie is a medium-burn reverse harem urban fantasy series. This action-packed, heart-wrenching ride gives you a kickass heroine, four irresistible gods, and Norse mythology like you’ve never seen it before.*
What a book! I picked this up from Amazon immediately after finishing the first in the series (then later that day discovered that I could have requested it on NetGalley. Ah well, the author deserves to be paid for how much I love this series).
Essentially, the characters are confined and forced to relive their worst memories – it’s a series of interactive and disturbing flashbacks from the minds of all 5 of the gods introduced in the first book (Loki, Thor, Baldur, Hod and Freya) and Aria the newbie valkyrie.
What makes this book exceptional is that the author rehashes Norse myths and legends, but from a very psychological aspect – how the gods feel about those stories and how they relate to each other in light of them.
As Aria is now seeing the skeletons in their closets, her bonds with them strengthen in some cases and are called into question in others. Not one to shy away from a raunchy scene or two (who am I kidding, I read some seriously naughty novels and don’t review them on here in case my mother reads them), even I felt that the big sex scene in this book was a little bit forced – I’d have been happy to keep going with the slow burn romance until the next installment so that the timing felt right.
This book blew my socks off, I wasn’t expecting a story this intense and heart wrenching – I’m devastated that I now have to wait for book 3 to see where the author takes this next!
